Almost a year since I started this blog and a few months since I've updated it... One of the reason I haven't posted anything in a while is because nothing much has happened! Living here means living at a sloooooowwwwww paste!
I returned to Malawi quite confident after my winter trip to Paris. I was coming back to a job, an office, potential income and career beginnings! But no! Since march 1st, I have been waiting for contracts... I am working at a consulting company based in Blantyre. Prospects are very exciting at the beginning as my job entails lots of travels and different NGO projects to work on every other month! However, getting these contracts takes time... I got word of my first one June 29th and I'm still waiting for the contract's signed copies to be delivered to my office...
Some days I really struggle to stay positive. I will stay in Malawi a little while longer. Next flight to Paris is in November...

The picture above was taken during a canoe trip on a hippo lagoon! There are good sides to being here!

Paris, J’arrive !

The two international schools closed down and 24 hours later all the foreign teachers along with many other expats boarded onto the Blantyre plane to London via Johannesburg. Most families reunite during the holiday seasons. My mom and I long debated on the subject but we decided against it. Malawi is a better place to travel to in March, when the rain stops, the maize is harvested and one can finally see the wild animals move about the bush! So, I am left behind to spend Xmas with friends in a Game park among elephants and rhinos! Then, if an elephant does not stomp me, I should be spending the New Year at a lodge in Cape Maclear on the lake Malawi shores. I was planning on spending the whole week there, but I have a lot of work to finish before 2006… Fortunately, my life just got easier, I am finally driving a car! No more suicidal rides in rotten mini buses! Yes! Independence! I am taking full advantage! It’s helping for work a lot too.

After being exposed to the Joshua organization for 2 months, I am just starting to understand how, where, when, and why it operates. It was no easy task! I should start writing my report in a week. I still have to make some surprise visits to the various centers to monitor the activities. However, although having a car helps, the rain kinda gets in the way… Most of the villages are located in remote rural areas and are only accessible by dirt roads. And the rain has rendered these roads impractical… mudslides... my car is not a four-wheel drive! I’ll make a plan!

My work has expanded a bit more since Sylvia left to the UK. In 2 days, I found myself directing a whole new volunteer program for Joshua. 2 Canadian girls randomly arrived last Thursday at Doogles (the local backpacker and bar/food place, regular hang out). I only had time to figure out how they could help out on my way there to fetch them… The weekend was just around the corner and I used it to introduce them to a lot of people and places in Blantyre. I am quite an expert now, to my own surprise! We went to Mulanje (waterfall pictures) and out to Doogles for food and drinks quite a few times already! Tuesday night was happy hour there and I unintentionally recruited two more volunteers, a Canadian and an American girl. Good thing I have a car now! So things are going well and I am gaining a lot of experience for sure! I am a program manager, project coordinator, communication officer, driver, assessment officer! By the end of this trip, I’ll have had a feel of all the job positions within the NGO sector! Let’s hope recruiters will think the same! So should I really go back to school?

I’m sorry I am not writing more personal emails but my schedule is pretty full. I have lots to do with Joshua, still editing a training manual for outgoing Malawian volunteers, and writing funding proposals for a complete different NGO, Mable’s Foundation for Women’s Empowerment. Miss you all lots!

Sorry I forgot to take the pictures on my flash disk... been real busy... losing it!

Blantyre district tyical village

The LAKE

Since the last post, Malawi has finally had some rain, a little, not enough but some. With the rain comes sticky air, stormy skies, and high temperatures. Rain also caused major water cuts, which is what I believe got me to the emergency room in a wheelchair last Wednesday… (Dirty water = upset stomach, especially a French stomach!) I spent one week in bed, lost 3 kg to some weird African stomach bug, but all is well, I gained them right back when spending the following weekend up at the lake! I am sorry I have not taken many new pictures, I promise I will soon. As for work, well things are moving along! I am volunteering with 3 different organisations. At Joshua, I have started conducting an assessment of past and present activities in order to evaluate the organisation’s worth and make relevant recommendations for improvement. At Mable’s foundation, I am a writer. After two years of self-funding, the director wants to put together a proposal to show his motivation and potential to international donors. This organisation focuses on women’s empowerment through 3 main programmes: a literacy programme, a sustainable economic enhancement program and a women’s rights advocacy programme. So my feminist self fits right in! The third NGO called AYISE (Active Youth Initiative for Social Enhancement) concentrates on youth action programmes. It offers various training and workshops to help Malawian youngsters tackle Malawian social and economic issues. For this NGO, I might travel to conferences and report back valuable information in writing. I just recently met this last one and we are still discussing how my services could best be used! There are no websites available for these NGOs as Malawian structures do not support wide internet services. That’s all for now, I am still settling in! I met two French girls this week and we are going together to the lake Friday. It’s good to get a little taste of home far away from home!

cil

lots and lots of kids

The internet connection is pretty good today so I am taking advantage and posting many pictures. These are of the kids in the different centres, which the Joshua Project supports. One had a party last friday to celebrate the sucess it has had since first opening a year ago. It took all afternoon, the kids danced and sang, and we distributed gifts.
Next week, xmas parties are starting! Some of these centres shelter up to 150 kids and they all say "Hello how are you I am fine" when Sylvia and I walk in. 150 kids, that's loud!
kisses
till next time

En ete au Malawi!

ENGLISH NOTE AT THE END
Gros bisous

This really happened : One day, Sylvia goes out to one of the centers to give the people a donation of pasta. (to get this right, you must read what follows out loud and with a thick British accent)
Sylvia: I have some pasta for you, do you know pasta?
The villager: yes, thank you madam
Sylvia: do you know how to cook it?
The man looks at her funny…. People in the villages eat maize and rice, but pasta is not a common food. Sylvia knows this so she starts explaining:
Sylvia: you boil water, you put a little salt and then you throw in the pasta
The man looks at her frightened: You mean the priest??

(get it? I’ll explain next time)

Children in rural Malawi

photos

voici donc mes premieres photos. I hope I soon succeed in posting some pictures on this blog! I am using some pretty up-to-date computer equipment from an internet café in Blantyre center. IT business seems to find fertile grounds just about everywhere in the world, don’t they?! And that’s good I must say! As a result, I think I’ll be able to upgrade this blog at least once a week!

So where to start? Well, once upon a time, there was this retired English lady who’d been living in Malawi for a couple of years and who one day decided to start helping the local communities suffering from poverty. Malawi is probably the second or third poorest country in the world. Most of the population lives under the poverty line, in remote rural areas, on a soil, which the rain just seems to boycott! AIDS and malaria are big killers out here. In addition to these diseases, hunger, maternal deaths and crime have orphaned millions of children. Out on the streets, these orphans become the victims of ill human natures. Some are trafficked into prostitution and pornography circles; others are used as trading commodities and turned into human slaves. Fortunately, orphans vulnerability is a well-known plague in the country and many local initiatives exist to fight the problem and protect the kids. There is not one family in Malawi not taking care of at least one orphan. Sylvia, my British lady, is one to support such initiatives.

Since I have arrived, she has taken me to visit a few of the villages’ orphan centers she supports. These centers operate during the daytime. Children come after school, which ends in the late morning, and are fed, bathed, and entertained until the late afternoon. At nights, relatives, neighbors and other caring community members take in orphans. These orphan centers function as Community Based Organizations (a term well-known amongst development experts, right?!), registered with the local authorities and recognized by the whole community or village. CBOs can benefit from local funding, but very seldom do, and also from the private sector, usually the expatriate community. Sylvia personally funds about 10 centers. A group of close friends in her UK home have organized themselves into a charity committee and regularly do fundraising activities for her project. Such a small-scale project, (between friends really if you think about it!) works really well. With the money collected and transferred to her, Sylvia can provide the different centers with bags of maize, soap, sugar, grains, clothes and other basic goods. When she returns to the UK, she meets with the committee to show them pictures, drawings and the like, and also to discuss the next year budget. As a school teacher, she feels she doesn’t handle the accounts as professionally as she should be. However, I think she does a very good job. She never ran out of resources for these centers. Today, she built about 3 schools, bought land for food production, and has helped and encouraged small local groups to become proper CBOs. She has called her project the Joshua Orphan Care Project. And all ten village orphan centers are children of the Joshua Project. Today, we are looking into making Joshua a NGO so that we can get more continuous funding from big international foundations (and a tax-exempt 4X4!! Yes we do need one!). However, we are not so sure to benefit from that much more as a NGO. It could just give the Malawian government an excuse to ask us for money (registration fee….) this is where I come in. Anyhow, it’s a lot to take in, and my days are full. I am adjusting to this new adventure but I find it surprisingly hard this time around. I am still on an emotional rollercoaster, but I suppose that’s what homesickness is all about, isn’t it? Until next time! Ciao…..

Enfin arrivee!

TO ALL MY ENGLISH SPEAKING FRIENDS...NEXT BLOG POST WILL BE IN ENGLISH
Merci! Greetings to all of you whom I have not contacted in a while... hope all is well! Thanks for checking out my blog. Since you last heard from me, I have returned to South Africa and tomorrow I am boarding a bus to Malawi. It's going to take about 30 hours... I am travelling all thoughout Zimbabwe and that should be quite exicting! I set up this blog to share with you all the good and the bad stuff! But I won't write too much of the bad stuff as to not worry the family...(overprotective father!) I am volunteering with a local NGO taking care of orphans and vulnerable families victims of AIDS. I should stay for about 6 months. Not more to say for now but keep on visiting my blog to find out! I am staying with a retired British couple who have established a primary school in the village and who are very involved with the NGO's activities.

Please leave me comments and let me know what's happening in your corner of the world.
